Siegel, DDS, MS, FDS, RCSEd We just concluded our annual case report competition. As D3 students, they are advised that they have both clinical years to find a patient with an intraoral or cutaneous lesion (and preferably a medically complex patient) on which to perform a complete workup to include history, clinical exam, photos, histopathology when indicated, differential diagnosis, final diagnosis and treatment. The student can document any indicated biopsy as well as surgery with our oral and maxillofacial surgeons and to scrub into the case when applicable. During the winter semester of the D4 year, students present their case to their assigned departmental faculty mentor. A rubric is used for grading. This represents their capstone oral medicine experience. The members of the department then choose the best eight presentations, which are, presented by the student to their class (the entire faculty is invited). Following their respective presentations, they are presented with a plaque from the department. The photo below was taken following all the best eight presentations. The faculty in the photo are (L to R): Dr. Sajish Kuriacose, Dr. Michael A Siegel, Dr. Lina M. Mejia and Dr. Steven Mescher. Missing from the photo are Dr, Jennie Ison and Dr. Lynn Solomon. West Virginia University School of DentistrySteven B. Whitaker, DDS Greetings from West Virginia! By the grace of God, it appears we have made it through the eye of the pandemic. Housed in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences, our Urgent Care Clinic has remained open since the beginning of the crisis. Along with our colleagues in Endodontics and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, we were able to relieve the pain and suffering of hundreds of patients from West Virginia and surrounding states. Of those who have come through the doors, to our knowledge not a single infection was transmitted from patient to clinician, clinician to patient or any other combination. Under the leadership of our COVID-19 Task Force leader, Dr. Juan Bugueno and Interim Dean, Dr. Fotinos Panagakos, we were given the information and resources necessary to continue to operate in an environment that was made as safe as possible. The majority of department staff, faculty and a handful of cheerful volunteers contributed mightily to the effort and continue to do so to this day! In closing, I would like to acknowledge a group of former D3 students whose professionalism shone during that critical period when offices were being forced to close. The “COVID-4” would not give up their posts without a fight. Now recent graduates; Dr. Sarah Civitillo, Dr. Lawson Hoover, Dr. Abdul Kaou and Dr. Mark Yohe’s dedication to our patients and school are great examples of why we are all proud Mountaineers!
