Artificial Intelligence in Oral Medicine, with an emphasis on Oral Cancer and Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders

Synopsis
Artificial intelligence (AI) has shown potential in improving how clinicians diagnose and manage numerous diseases across various fields. Oral mucosal diseases, and in particular oral cancer and potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs), contribute to a significant health concern globally, and early detection/management of our patients is critical for improving patient outcomes. Despite some promising research, several challenges remain in the implementation of AI in oral medicine. These include the need for large, diverse datasets to train AI models, ensuring data privacy and security, and addressing potential biases in algorithmic decision-making.

In conclusion, AI has the potential to improve the diagnosis and management of important diseases we encounter as oral medicine specialists (and educate our students about). As an academy, and a global community, there are opportunities to work together to help implement AI in oral medicine.

  1. Define artificial intelligence (AI), with a description of the history and current nomenclature/terminology.
  2. List the domains of potential uses for AI in Oral Medicine.

Cone Beam CT (CBCT) in Oral Medicine: Using the 3rd Dimension to Aid in Diagnosis

Synopsis
Dentomaxillofacial imaging has seen an exponential growth in the utilization of cone beam CT (CBCT) imaging over the last 25 years. CBCT technology offers superior hard tissue resolution without overlapping anatomy at a fraction of the acquisition time and radiation exposure. This course aims to provide the OM practitioner with a basic understanding of CBCT technology and clinically relevant factors to achieve maximal diagnostic imaging. Incorporation of clinical case studies will illustrate the power of CBCT imaging in distinguishing hard tissue pathologies, both common and not so common.

Maxillofacial disease diagnosis with MR imaging

Synopsis
Soft tissue and jaw lesions are best characterized and evaluated by MR imaging due its superior soft-tissue contrast, improved delineation of internal lesion matrix, and ability to assess the involvement of the bone marrow in infectious and malignant disease processes. This course will highlight the MRI features of common jaw and salivary gland lesions. Case-based interactive discussions will be used to provide an interpretative algorithm for approaching any jaw or soft tissue lesions as well as TMJ disk abnormalities in the maxillofacial region.

  1. Understand T1, T2 and contrast MR images.
  2. Be familiar with MR findings of common jaw lesions.

Ultrasonography as a diagnostic aid in the diagnosis of potentially malignant oral disorders and oral carcinoma

Synopsis
Ultrasonography is a diagnostic tool that uses sound echoes to produce images of tissues and organs. Ultrasonography techniques have characterized different lesions, from oral fibroma, bullous (pemphigus and pemphigoid), and OPMD to oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Some authors also compared the anatomopathologic findings with ultrasound images. Ultrasounds seem to be more accurate in small lesions (<5mm) than reference diagnostic systems such as MRI and CT. The intraoral approach was a real-time, non-invasive way to characterize oral lesions.

However, different devices with different frequencies and different landmarks have been used in the studies. These limitations add to the inherent limitations of the technique, which is operator-dependent. In other branches of medicine, much progress has been made through computer image analysis, computer vision, deep learning, and artificial intelligence (AI) in general. After giving a broad overview of the use of this technique in oral medicine, this course aims to describe the application potential of image analysis, computer vision, and deep learning technologies in this field.

  2. Understand the application of intraoral ultrasonography in the context of the oral mucosa.
  3. Be familiar with ultrasound findings of common oral lesions.
