The NIDCR Office of the Clinical Director (OCD) encourages a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment that promotes the translation of basic research discoveries into clinical practices. The OCD oversees, in coordination with the Office of the Scientific Director, all clinical activities related to NIDCR’s mission by providing management and administrative support for clinical research protocols; offering a dental consult service for the NIH Clinical Center patient population; supporting a Dental Clinical Research Fellowship; and conducting ground-breaking human clinical trials with an emphasis on rare diseases and diseases of high public health impact. A Staff Clinician Dentist will support the NIDCR Clinical and Translational Research Program and work closely with the Principal Investigator of the Salivary Disorders Unit and the clinical research team who support the Sjogren’s SyndromeClinic. The Sjögren’s Syndrome Clinic is a multi-specialty research clinic with anintegrated basic and translational research laboratory. The major activities of the Clinic include the research and development of new therapies to treat Sjögren’s Syndrome and other salivary gland disorders, including the design and conduct of clinical trials, the clinical phenotyping of patients, and the collection of bio specimens for research studies. In this position, the Staff Clinician Dentist will support current and future clinical research activities including the management of research protocol patients, hospital consultations, and training of clinical fellows. The Staff Clinician Dentist will provide research-focused oral evaluation and care to patients participating in research studies at the world-renowned National Institute of Health Clinical Center. As part of a multidisciplinary clinical team, the Staff Clinician Dentist will deliver routine and research-driven oral care, interacting closely with primary care providers and other members of the medical and dental teams (e.g., oral surgeons, periodontists, oral medicine/pathologist specialists, and dental clinical research fellows). Additionally, the Staff Clinician Dentist will triage patient care needs, provide other consultative services as required, and share on-call responsibilities for the Dental Clinic. In this role, the Staff Clinician Dentist will also work with teams of clinical and basic scientists within the DIR to support a strong collaborative research environment and participate in relevant research collaborations and provide expertise where appropriate. The Staff Clinician Dentist is encouraged to participate in study design, subject recruitment, and other aspects of research conduct. The Staff Clinician Dentist is expected to take initiative in learning and applying new techniques and technologies in the Clinic to advance the research goals and aims of the Principal Investigator and their collaborators. Skills/Qualifications Required: Applicants must have a Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry degree from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body, or other dental school provided the education and knowledge is equivalent to that of an ADA-approved school. Applicants must have evidence of clinical competence in providing routine adult and pediatric dental care and proficiency in providing dental care in the outpatient, inpatient, and operating room settings, preferably with demonstrated clinical activity within 2 years of this announcement. Additionally, clinical experience and competence in the recognition, diagnosis, and management of salivary gland disorders, oral mucosal abnormalities, immune-mediated and autoimmune disorders (e.g., Sjögren’s Syndrome), and oral manifestations of systemic and infectious diseases is required. Applicants must have completed a hospital-based residency in oral medicine, oral and maxillofacial pathology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, or hospital dentistry in an institution accredited for such training and have an active, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico (restricted, teaching or limited licenses do not qualify). Strong preference will be given to individuals with residency training and board-certification in oral medicine, oral and maxillofacial pathology, or oral and maxillofacial surgery with at least 2 years of hospital-based practice or training experience. Priority will be given to those who have formal training or experience in the conduct of human subjects research. Experience with academic clinical care, clinical research or clinical trials, or intimate knowledge of the NIH and areas of clinical research noted above are highly desired. Salary will be commensurate with training credentials and clinical experience.
