Passing of Dr. Sol Silverman Jr.

It is with deep sadness that we inform members of the American Academy of Oral Medicine and dental colleagues from the USA and around the world that our friend and colleague, Dr. Sol (Bud) Silverman Jr. passed away on August 13th, 2014.  He had suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed on the left side of his body, but even in his last days, he was full of good cheer. He was 88 years old and was still active both professionally and physically. Bud was a mentor, leader and inspiration for a large number of colleagues from the national and international dental communities and had taught and cared for patients at University of California San Francisco for over half a century during his illustrious career. He will be remembered for his enthusiasm, integrity, honesty, and compassion for his patients.  It is hard to find words that accurately describe what Bud meant to many of us in oral medicine and to those who were fortunate and privileged to have worked with him. We have lost a great man, an incredible human being, an exemplary teacher and for those of us who had the chance to play with him, a great tennis and basketball partner.
