The American Board of Oral Medicine (ABOM) administers a certification process for dentists who are accomplished in the field. Individuals who pass all requirements of this Board become Diplomates of the American Board of Oral Medicine.

Requirements for ABOM Certification are as follows:

Section 1. General Requirements

  1. Moral and ethical standing satisfactory to the Board.
  2. Graduation from an Oral Medicine program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association and recognized by the American Board of Oral Medicine.
  3. License to practice dentistry in any state or territory of the United States or in any nation with equivalent standards.
  4. Membership in good standing in any oral medicine association/group.

Section 2. Specific Requirements

  1. A candidate for Part A Board certification must have met all Section 1 general requirements, and must be currently enrolled in or have completed postgraduate study in oral medicine from a program accredited by the American Board of Oral Medicine. 
  2. A candidate for Part B (or concurrent Parts A and B) Board certification must have obtained a certificate of successful completion of postgraduate study in oral medicine from a program accredited by the American Board of Oral Medicine. 
  3. A candidate must have engaged in the practice of the specialty of oral medicine for a minimum of eighteen (18) months after receiving the certificate or degree in oral medicine before applying for the examination. 
  4. A candidate must satisfactorily fulfill the examination requirements of the Board.
Apply for the ABOM Examination:
The ABOM exam will be held on: Tuesday April 4, 2017 (Part A), Wednesday, April 5, 2017 (Part B) in conjunction with the American Academy of Oral Medicine annual meeting in Orlando, Florida. You can view the entire 2017 annual conference schedule here
