Drs. Michael A. Siegel and Valerie A. Murrah, et. al. have published a video entitled, “Oral Cancer Head and Neck Examination” through the MedEdPORTAL.  The MedEdPORTAL is a collaboration of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the American Dental Education Association (ADEA).  This is a venue established to publish educational materials that are peer reviewed and will be accepted in promotion and tenure dossiers.  Dental School Dean’s are all aware of the MedEdPortal through the work of the ADEA.  The peer review process is efficient and professional.  All forms of educational media can be submitted.

This video was prepared by Dr. Siegel (Nova Southeastern University), Dr. Murrah (University of North Carolina Chapel Hill) and Mr. Dominic Aloise (a 4th year dental student at Nova Southeastern University).  This video can be downloaded and used for any educational purpose.  All too often, our students are told what to do during a head and neck examination, but never see how to do it.  This video is approximately 40 minutes long and covers basic cancer statistics, taking a pertinent medical history, performing an appropriate extraoral examination with lymph node palpation, performing an appropriate intraoral examination and a self-assessment.  It was developed for use in the classroom, but may be used for continuing education or faculty calibration purposes.
