Dr. Ruth E. Berggren, M.D., MACP, Professor Medicine, Director, The Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics

A graduate of Oberlin College and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Berggren trained in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, followed by a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of Colorado, where she was an NIH Division of AIDS Fellow. Dr. Berggren has extensive experience in clinical AIDS and hepatitis research and implementing HIV care in resource-poor settings, including Haiti, and New Orleans. Her many teaching activities are thematically linked by the concept of "ethics in action". As Director of the Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics, she is actively engaged in educating medical and dental health professionals in ethics and professionalism, while nurturing empathy and humanitarian values. Dr. Berggren directs multiple medical school courses in Global Health, Community Service Learning, ethics, and social determinants of health. She has a particular interest in addressing barriers to health care access, health disparities, and the challenges of medical error disclosure.
