Call for Abstracts

AAOM invites individuals (students, residents/fellows, junior and senior investigators) to submit abstracts (original investigations or case reports) for the 2017 American Academy of Oral Medicine Annual Meeting. Any investigation/case report, in any form, previously published are not eligible. Relevant unpublished abstracts previously presented at other conference are eligible for submission. The Abstracts Committee will select abstracts for poster and oral presentations. Those accepted for oral presentation will be published in the Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, and Oral Radiology Journal.

The deadline for submitting abstracts has now passed.

Decisions will be sent to corresponding authors via email by February 15, 2017. If accepted, the presenting author is required to register for the meeting and be present during the scheduled poster/oral sessions. Abstracts are accepted contingent that the presenting author register and present the abstract at the annual meeting. An abstract without a registered presenter by the registration deadline of March 7th will be withdrawn and will be ineligible for publication in Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, and Oral Radiology Journal.

INSTRUCTIONS

There are three links on the submission page - “Original Investigation (OI),” “Case Report (CR),” and “Lester Burket Memorial Award (LBMA).” All abstracts must be submitted under one of the three links. Please pay extra attention to which category you are submitting. Submission to a wrong category may result in withdrawal of the abstract.

Abstracts for OI and CR are limited to a maximum of 300 words. Abstracts for LBMA are limited to a maximum of 750 words. Tables and figures are not allowed.

All submitted abstracts must be categorized as either “Original Investigation” or “Case Report.” There is a separate link for each category in the abstract submission software. Submission to a wrong category may result in withdrawal of the abstract.

There is a specific abstract format in each category. Any submission not following the format may be withdrawn from consideration.

Original Investigation Abstract Format:

a) Objectives (aims/purpose, hypotheses, and goals of the investigation)
b) Methods (brief description of experimental procedures including statistics)
c) Results (findings of statistical analysis)
d) Conclusions (one or two major conclusions that are supported by results)

Case Report Abstract Format:

a) Background (A few sentences providing information relevant to case)
b) Case summary (chief complaint, other pertinent historical and examination data, diagnostic investigations and results (laboratory, radiographic, etc.), and therapeutic or management strategies/outcomes)
c) Conclusions (significance/relevance of case)

Lester Burket Memorial Award

a) Objectives: introduction that clearly indicates the purpose of the study, hypotheses, and goals of the investigation
b) Methods: a description of the experimental procedures including statistical methods
c) Results: findings of statistical analysis
d) Conclusions: supported by results
e) Funding sources including grant numbers

AWARDS

Lester Burket Memorial Award

The Lester Burket Memorial Award (LBMA) was created to honor the memory of Dr. Lester Burket to promote basic and clinical research in oral medicine. Only research conducted by residents/fellows of accredited US and Canadian oral medicine training programs are eligible. Graduates of these oral medicine programs are eligible to submit their abstracts as long as the research was initiated during their residency. There is NO maximum of entrant per program. The abstracts should represent significant thesis-level research. There are two awards, one for basic science and the other for clinical research.

Award recipients will be notified by mid-February, 2017. Awardees will give a 20-minute oral presentation at the 2017 AAOM meeting. Winners in both LBMA categories will receive $1,500, a one-year membership in the AAOM, and the conference registration fee will be waived for recipients.

Robert and Kay Schattner Award
A student, resident or fellow at the conference will be eligible for the Robert and Kay Schattner Award for the best presentation of an original investigation abstract. Judging for this award will take place during the meeting.

Case Report Awards
The three best case reports submitted by students/residents/fellows will be selected to give a 15-minute oral case presentation at the AAOM Meeting, and will receive a small monetary award. Judging will be based on the quality, clarity, and clinical significance of the abstract submission. Award recipients will be notified by mid-February, 2017.
